Imagined Lands

More about this item

The illustrated stamp album for postage stamps of the world. Imagined Lands, vol. XIV - Scotland.

"Published in an edition of 500 copies by the City of Edinburgh Museums and Galleries, to coincide with the exhibition Imagined Lands, City Art Centre, Edinburgh, 16th November 1996 - 4th January 1997."

Curated by Alec Finlay, the stamps are designed by Ian Hamilton Finlay, Edwin Morgan and Linda Taylor, Eileen Lawrence, Kate Whiteford, David Bellingham, and Robin Gillanders. The book includes 12 sheets of stamps (each containing 12 stamps).

"The idea for these Scottish postage stamps occurred around the same time as the Democracy March in Edinburgh (1992). A year or so later a friend introduced me to the work of the American stamp artist Donald Evans. His beautiful miniature worlds, with their playful names and invented histories, became the inspiration to realise the Imagined Lands project. The example of Evans' work freed the Scottish stamps from being simply a political project, although they do still make a clear statement. The twelve designs that have been commissioned and printed are only one suggestion, or imagination, as to how Scotland might be represented, were it to have a page of its own in the album of the world."
