Tales from Baron Munchausen by Edwin Morgan

More about this item

"Tales from Baron Munchausen is Edwin Morgan's 'poetic reconstructions' of some of the stories ascribed to the infamous solder whose name has come to be synonymous with tall tales," says the cover blurb. The twelve monologues (in the Baron's voice) were "originally commissioned in May 2004 by Benno Plassmann for solo performances and events with Glasgow arts organisation The Working Party".

The book opens with a letter from Morgan to Baron Munchausen:

"You were clearly a man of the world, and the world was still, is still, a mysterious place, where unexplained things happen every week, especially to soldiers and sportsmen and explorers and adventurers like yourself. You have that particular power of spellbinding which lies at the heart of entertainment and art. And we do not even know you, except superficially and by hearsay; you disappear into your work; your stories are told by someone else, and a rascal at that. Well, I salute your semi-invisibility."
